 "Does What it Promises" 2009-08-27
By a reader (St Paul, MN USA)
We have had our 17kw Generac for 2-3 years, and it faithfully runs when it is needed. It does run for 10-15 minutes once a month as a self-test etc, and regular maintenance checks are required (no more than 1x year). Provides wonderful peace of mind.

 "Bad Product " 2008-11-13
By Wallace F. Werner (Port Neches, Tx United States)
I have a Generac 12Kw generator I bought 3 years ago. It ran automatically 12 minutes a week to exercise the engine. In the 3 years it has powered my home about a total of 2 hours. It was warranted for 2 years. Just before Gustav hit the gulf coast the generator bit the dust. Between Gustav and Ike I had a Generac dealer check out the problem. The problem ended up being major. After the tech came out 3 times he found the rotor to be bad. We found out the thursday before Ike arrived. I went ahead and evacuated. When I came back from Ike I took the generator apart and brought the rotor to another dealer for a double check. The tech at that dealer said that he had changed out 3 or 4 of the rotors on the same model. He said they were faulty built rotors. I contacted Generac about the faulty rotor and they said to tell them the whole story in writing and they would see if they could cover the rotor. Right now I am sitting here with a useless generator and Generac will not send me a new rotor unless I let the highest price Generac dealer install the rotor at what ever price they want to charge for labor. Believe me, you don't want to buy a generac generator. I have heard other stories about them. A 3 year warranty is really not good on something that doesn't run but a couple of hours in 3 years. This generator cost me a total of $3200 just to hear it exercise itself for 3 years. I am trying to make up my mind to spend another $240 to have it go out again. If you don't have power outages but a few minutes a year it's not worth the trouble. Do not depend on it. My neighbor across the street bought one for a 6600 sq.ft. home before the hurricane's hit this summer and they never was able to use theirs. The company that installed it had to replace it with another. It was a big Carrier generator.

We own a standby Guardian generator and are very happy with the product. Living in a wooded area, we lose power often during wind and rain storms. In the event of an outtage, the lights go dark for approx 30 seconds and then LIGHTS! We have septic & well, and a small child so for us this was a necessity.

 "Florida confort and peace" 2009-06-03
By Luc Belec (Florida)
I do have the previous model, what is the same thing but a different "box" I did have it 2 day before Katrina and here in Hollywood we did have-it Purdy good. Well of course I did not have a perfect installation but everything got hock-up in less the 8 hours. This kit is perfect. The automatic switch box makes the generator kick-in in 30 seconds from a power outage, and switch back-in by itself. I did select this unit because I have an AC who draw 13 amps a 230 1 ph. and all the light, PCs, Tv and small thing draw no more than 2 Amps a 115v. No hot water or oven. And I can't have the cafe going with the toaster Oh well I can have-it all because I'm cheap...

I didn't want to be independent from the gas company, and then I did install a liquid propane system. When Wilma past-by I did run the unit almost 24 hrs a day and I did consume about 75 to 100# of LP a day what is expensive but cheaper then gas and you can store-it for a long theme. Also Propane can be find faster than gas, because gas station need electricity...

For the noise level, I didn't have any complaints from Nabors or if I'm in one room away I can barely hear-it. The control is very simple. Spot the breaker you want to be cover, disconnect-it and connect the wires to the new circuit. It's that easy.

The only thing you will need is a battery, oil, a base to install it, gas line (1" pipe minimum) and regulator. The unit is complete by itself, easy to install, be careful it's 800#, a bit heavy for one guy... Read the book it's short and simple, the set-up takes a minute, the governor is a bit tutchy to adjust especially when there a full load starts. For the maintenance, I change the oil, oil filter and the air filter one a year keep an eye on the gas and that-it. Notice the unit cover is painted with a good quality cook enamels, I have it expose to the sun and rain, after 3 years it look like new still.

To be on a safe side have an electrician doing the electric system and the gas Co. to do the line work. And for not a arm and a leg you will be sleeping with peace and comfort.

PS Sorry for my french, I'm a handy man more then a writer...

Champion offers the highest endurance and performance generators on the market. Each generator is designed to provide a reliable and instant power supply. This generator works on a typical propane tank (LPG Tank) that?s used on many BBQ's and RV?s on the market today which is an ideal fuel choice for camping and emergency back-up power. The fuel stores easily and will last longer than gasoline and does not require a fuel stabilizer when storing for any length of time, with a sealed fuel system there is no risk of fuel vapors or spillage. A LPG/Propane power generator runs quietly with no smoke or smell and is certified by the U.S Environment Protection Agency and CARB, which ensures your generator will not harm the environment. Champion?s LPG/Propane lean burning generator burns cleaner, Carbon Monoxide levels are 1/100th of those of conventional gasoline generators. This is unique to Champion LPG technology and not available on typical LPG conversions.

 "No Gasoline!" 2009-08-23
By C. L. Moore (Houston, TX United States)
This is a really nice generator. It came set up, just add the supplied oil and bolt on the wheel kit. We live in a hurricane zone (Houston) and really need generators sometimes. Last year Ike hit and my two old generators got us through 2 weeks with no electricity. The only problem was finding gas for them. I spent a lot of time just trying to find gas stations that were open and had gas. This generator runs on LP gas so you can not only store it safer, but you can also get it almost anywhere. Grocery stores, drug stores, Home depot, Lowes, etc. A lot easier than trying to find gasoline. Also this generator is quieter than my old ones and easy to start. It also doesn't have gasoline sitting in the float and turning to sludge so it stores better with less maintenance. It will be ready when you need it. I will update if we have another Hurricane - I hope I won't have to.

P.S. Since this runs on LP gas it can be converted to run on natural gas, just a different orifice and a connection. I haven't gotten the plumber to do it yet, but I do have 5 20# LP bottles ready.

 "Great so far" 2009-01-07
By PB
I normally don't write reviews on products I haven't had very long, but this is an exception because hopefully it will never get used, thus making a review possibly impossible later. We turned it on and ran it for about an hour, to see how well it worked. We did not, however, hook the appliances up that we would hook up in an emergency: Our 2 outdoor freezers and our refrigerator. We've already calculated what would be needed for start-up power and running power, and this generator more than fills this need. We plugged in some smaller items to make sure all the plugs were working properly, and electricity generated, and everything worked as it should. One thing I will say is that this is extremely LOUD. I checked this out on any sites I could find, and read about a low decibel rating, but the generator might really anger some neighbors if we truly need to use it. Maybe moving it off the patio might help, not sure.

I also checked for odor emanating from the unit, and there was none standing very close.

We purchased this instead of a gas generator for these reasons: 1. In a power outage gas will be much harder to get than propane. Many gas stations need the electricity to pump gas, and if they have backup power, everyone will be running to fill up. 2. Propane burns cleaner than gas. 3. We don't want to have to treat gas and keep it stored for that time we actually might need it. It's much easier to store propane.

As we have a natural gas line going out to our patio, for a gas BBQ, we will be having someone convert the propane line to a natural gas line.

One last thought: Per what I've researched, gasoline generators can run higher wattage items than propane generators or natural gas generators. So, you'll need to increase the wattage on the generator to get the same power as gas, which we did.

 "Powermax XP8500E/ Maxtools" 2009-09-08
By Jeff425
Stay away from this particular brand of generator. I purchased the Powermax 8500E generator in April/09 from [...] against my better judgement. The nice looks and good price just suckered me right in. Put it together, added a gallon of gas and it ran fine for the short period I tested it. Well we had a power outtage which required me to fill the tank up. I was finally gonna get a chance to use this brand new generator, that still had the tags on it. After 1 hr. of running I noticed fuel seeping thru the side of the fuel tank and couldn't believe it. No worry though, Maxtools will stand behind it, or so I thought. Called [...] and spoke with a very UN-Helpful customer service represenitive who told me he would send me a new tank for $25.00 bucks for the shipping. What a joke! Way to stand behind your product. Anyway, those who have left positive reviews for these generators have not had them for any length of time. [...]

 "Good design and components" 2008-12-30
By Rocco Froio (Worcester, Mass)
I am pleased with my new generator, just as I read in another review. Add oil, gas turn the key and rooommm.

I found a car jack very useful in assembling the wheels and legs.

The gas cap has a tight fit a more robust grip would have made it better.

I was dissapointed in that it does not have a low idle switch used to conserve fuel, the salesman told me it did still I like it.

Ciao

 "Worthless and never used!" 2008-12-24

I bought this gererator a while ago and it ran fine the first time I test fired it. I then drained it of fuel as they advised. Tried to use it for the second time and gas started leaking out of the fuel valve. Tried to get POWERMAX customer service to help and they informed me my warrenty was up two days ago, but they could sell me the part. Really nice way to back up your product POWERMAX! For the amount of money I spent on this piece of crap generator and the 1/2 a use I got out of it, topped off by snotty, customer sevice I think I'll buy a Honda next time. Even POWERMAX customer service told me Honda generators last so long you can will them to your kids!! If you are wondering do not work for Honda in fact I'm a photographer. POWERMAX you should be ashamed of your selves and you poor workmanship!!
